Friday was a dark day for America.
That isn’t me being hyperbolic, I legitimately believe that what we just saw happen between Trump and Zelensky was an embarrassment to America, for one, completely spitting in the face of the work that we and our Western European Allies did trying to put the pieces together after World War 2 and Adolf Hitler’s rampant genocidal rampage that was the Holocaust and the deaths of 35 million, an embarrassment to Trump himself, as he just, without any remorse, berated President Zelensky for asking for American support in trying to keep his country safe from a man who had made it clear that he is trying to reestablish the borders of the Russian Empire/USSR, and just a foreign policy disaster overall.
Putting my vitriol aside, what did we actually witness in the White House on Friday?
The entire interview ,and the visit as a whole actually was pretty calm for the most part. The day started with the two leaders greeting and posing for a photo, with Trump saying, “He’s all dressed up today!” And even in the Oval Office itself, the meeting was normal, for the most part.
That is, until, Brian Glenn, (whom I might add is Marjorie Taylor Greene’s boyfriend), asked President Zelensky, “Why don't you wear a suit?”
He was a bit perplexed and asked him to repeat the question. He does, adding that “a lot of Americans have problems with you not respecting this office.”

He then added "I will wear a costume when this war is finished." (By the way, the word kostium, pronounced like we Americans say the word costume, means suit in Ukrainian).
And this soured the mood. Quick.
Within literal minutes, JD Vance starts dogpiling on President Zelensky and says:
“Mr. President, with respect, I think its disrespectful for you to come into the Oval Office and litigate this in front of the American Media.”
and then goes on to say that Mr. Zelensky should be thanking Trump for trying to get a ceasefire. This sours the mood even more, and leads to the famous blowup between Zelensky and Trump that made international news, with Trump saying that Zelensky was gambling with World War 3, and having JD Vance hop back in, asking him “Have you said thank you once?” and they continue to dogpile even further until Trump and Zelensky, with their small contingent of advisers break into separate rooms to meet.
After this, Trump while taking questions from the media, said of the interview, when asked what Zelensky could do to potentially get talks back on track,
"He's gotta say, 'I wanna make peace,'" Mr. Trump said. "He doesn't have to stand there and say about, 'Putin this, Putin that.' All negative things. He's gotta say, 'I wanna make peace. I don't want to fight a war any longer.' His people are dying. He doesn't have the cards just so you understand it, okay?"
President Trump, when asked what Zelensky could do to potentially get talks back on track
With WH Press Sec Karoline Leavitt saying that President Zelensky failed to recognize a “new sheriff in town.”
She also blamed Zelensky for his “rude and antagonistic behavior”, echoing many right wing responses to this, blasting Zelensky for his attitude.
By the way, you’re probably wondering where Secretary Rubio was in all of this. He was sitting right next to JD Vance so surely, with him being the country’s highest ranking diplomat, that would mean he’d at least say something, right?
Right?
Well, no. He was sitting next to JD Vance, but he didn’t say anything really. He just sat there looking depressed as all hell, rethinking his life choices.
So now that we have established what exactly happened, what are the implications for this?
Grim, to put it bluntly.
With that meeting in the WH on Friday, that sent a chilling message to China and Taiwan, effectively giving them the green light to invade Taiwan without any real repercussions, at least from America, we sent a message to our allies in western Europe, the same western European allies who we got together with to help put Europe back together after World War 2, that we are on the side of the autocrats. We are effectively with Russia, since we have a President who is cozying up to Putin anyways.
We have effectively spat on 8+ decades of work. The work that we and our Allies spent trying to reestablish a world order, now effectively made null and void.
The entire Cold War and the fall of the Berlin Wall, gone.
We just monumentally embarrassed ourselves in front of international media.
There is next to nothing we can to to right the ship, say for impeaching Trump, but we know that will take heaven and Earth to do.
We need to use our voices to tell our leaders that isn’t okay. Giving our allies the cold shoulder and cozying up to a dictator, isn’t okay.
